Applications:
ATH is an inexpensive inorganic fire retardant. The most popular fire retardant in plastic and rubber, such as polyesters, acrylics, ethylene vinyl acetate, epoxies, PVC, and rubber, ATH has the property of being both fire retardant and having good performance to reduce smoke and toxic gas.
The smallest particle size, ATH-1, has a low to 1 um distribution. This grade is simple to incorporate into products like ink.
The large dosage of ATH makes it simple to alter the material's mechanical properties. Although the performance can be enhanced by the fine particle size, its volume should also be controlled.
Synergism is very strong and can greatly enhance performance when AL (OH) 3 is composited with other types of fire retardants, such as Zinc Borate, Phosphorus, and PBDEs.
The performance of the fire retardant and mechanical properties is better than standard grade AL (OH) 3 when the surface of the ATH-1 grade is treated with a non-polar polymer made of silicon oil or stearic acid. This improves compatibility and combination with plastic materials and makes it easier to distribute evenly throughout the material.
