General Description:
Beta-Cyclodextrin methyl ethers is a heptacosaccharide that is soluble in water and has a higher affinity for cholesterol due to its hydrophobic core. Cyclodextrins are cyclic oligosaccharides composed of 6, 7, or 8 glucose pyranoses units, commonly referred to as α-, β-, or γ -cyclodextrin, respectively. The rigid ring structure of these compounds makes them natural complexing agents. These compounds tend to form intramolecular hydrogen bonds between the C2- and C3-hydroxyl groups of their adjacent glucose pyranogens units, giving their unique structure stability.
The C2- and C3-hydroxyl groups are positioned around the larger open end of the molecule, and the more reactive C6-hydroxyl groups are positioned around the smaller open end. The molecule is circular in form. A hydrophobic interior with an electron-rich interior is created by the positioning of the c6-hydroxyl groups in opposition to the C2- and C3-hydroxyl groups in the cavity. The size of the interior depends on the quantity of glucopyryl units that make up cyclodextrin.
